Abstract

Abstract: A child's religious identity change in a Christian family transcends personal belief, reshaping family notions of obedience, parenting success, parental authority, loyalty, and belonging. Religious deidentification should be read as relational reorganization, since conflict stems not only from diminished shared faith but from renegotiating boundaries between spiritual responsibility and control, belief and acceptance, and difference and family membership. An integrative review of the psychology of religion, family sociology and therapy, and pastoral theology yields three findings. First, such change turns destructive when belief differences are framed as moral failure or family disloyalty. Second, parental warmth determines whether faith differences foster dialogue or estrangement, yet loses relational power when instrumentalized toward particular faith decisions. Third, pastoral counseling must distinguish nurturing faith from controlling children's inner lives. I propose differentiated loyalty and the Relational Pastoral Reconnection Model, encompassing de-escalating conflict, mapping responsibility boundaries, restoring remaining bonds, and renegotiating shared practices. This reframes pastoral success from uniformity toward families' capacity to hold convictions without making love a tool of control.
